Gabion Retaining Walls: A Unique Alternative for Colorado Landscapes

Gabion Retaining Walls: A Unique Alternative for Colorado Landscapes

When most homeowners picture a retaining wall, they think of traditional concrete blocks or poured concrete. Those materials can work well, but they are not the only options.

We recently completed several gabion retaining walls as part of a front yard landscape, and the finished project shows just how much character the right wall can add to a property.

What Is a Gabion Wall?

A gabion wall is built using heavy-duty metal cages filled with natural stone. The stone provides the weight and stability, while the exposed steel framework gives the wall its distinctive appearance.

Gabion walls have been used for erosion control and large civil projects for years, but they are also becoming a great option for residential landscaping. They can serve a practical purpose while looking more like a custom landscape feature than a standard retaining wall.

A Retaining Wall That Becomes Part of the Design

For this front yard, we did not want the retaining walls to feel separate from the rest of the landscape. We designed the gabion walls to work with the natural slope while also creating structure around the lawn, pathways and planting areas.

The cages were filled with rounded natural stone that complements the surrounding river rock, landscape boulders and stone steps. Dark steel frames create contrast against the lighter stone and coordinate well with the home’s modern exterior.

Instead of one long wall, the gabions were incorporated throughout the yard at different elevations. This helped define the landscape without making the front yard feel boxed in or overly formal.

Why Consider a Gabion Retaining Wall?

Gabion walls offer several advantages for the right property:

  • They create a custom look that stands apart from standard retaining-wall block.
  • The stone can be selected to coordinate with the home and surrounding landscape.
  • Their weight makes them a strong option for holding back soil when properly designed and installed.
  • The open stone construction allows water to move through the wall more naturally than it can through a solid concrete surface.
  • They work especially well with native, modern, mountain-inspired and xeriscape designs.
  • The steel and natural stone develop additional character as the landscape matures.

Every yard is different, so proper preparation, drainage and structural design are still important. Taller walls or walls supporting significant loads may require engineering and permits.

More Than Just the Wall

What makes this project stand out is how the gabion walls connect with the entire front yard.

The finished landscape combines:

  • Custom gabion retaining walls
  • Natural stone steps and walkways
  • Large landscape boulders
  • River rock and contrasting decorative rock
  • A shaped lawn area
  • Evergreen trees, shrubs and ornamental grasses
  • Low-voltage landscape lighting
  • Drainage features incorporated into the overall design

Together, these elements create a front yard that feels natural and established while still having a clean, intentional layout.

Are Gabion Walls Right for Every Yard?

Gabion walls are a great choice when homeowners want the retaining wall to become a focal point. They are especially effective on sloped properties, modern homes and landscapes that already feature rock, boulders or other natural materials.

However, they are not automatically the best solution for every location. The right wall depends on the grade, soil conditions, drainage, available space, desired appearance and the amount of soil being retained.

At Running Creek Contracting, we look at the entire property before recommending a wall system. In some yards, traditional retaining-wall block may still be the best fit. In others, gabion walls can completely transform the landscape.
